Course summary

If you have the potential to study at degree level, but you dont meet the entry requirements, a foundation year can help bridge the gap – laying the groundwork for entry into Year 1. The units youll study are designed to build your confidence and bring you up to speed for the rest of your chosen degree. As well as the Academic Practice units, which help develop your study skills for learning at degree-level, youll also study a selection of humanities units. Once you have successfully passed your Foundation Year you will progress directly onto Year 1 of your linked honours degree.

Career prospects

Successful completion of the foundation year guarantees automatic progression into Year 1 of your chosen linked degree.

Previous graduates of BA English and Multimedia Journalism have entered a wide range of careers. These include media work and teaching, where their transferable skills are particularly relevant, but also extend to banking, finance, manufacturing and retail.

In particular, the rapidly changing digital media and creative industries offer career opportunities in an extremely wide range of sectors, including: print journalism, digital publishing and editing, broadcasting, researching, media development, freelance writing, specialist journalism, working for news agencies, public relations departments, and public sector press departments.

There is also the opportunity to engage in further study and professional training. Some graduates have undertaken further professional training to work in law, public administration, management, and librarianship. Others have gone on to study creative writing at postgraduate level at our Manchester Writing School, under the creative direction of Professor Carol Ann Duffy DBE (Poet Laureate 2009-2019).
